Dr. Michael Phillips, MD
Dr. Michael H. Phillips is originally from Colorado, having been raised in Denver. He completed his undergraduate degree with a major in Biological Sciences at Washington University, in St. Louis Missouri. After undergraduate school, he worked in the Laboratory for Human Performance at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, Colorado, where he participated in coursework in the graduate program in physiology. He enrolled in the University of Colorado Health Sciences School of Medicine graduating in 1979 with Honors. While in Medical School he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.
Following medical school Dr. Phillips came to George Washington University where he completed the General Surgery/Urology resident program in 1984. As a resident he received the Golden Apple Teaching award, from the graduating class of 1981.
He joined the Urologic Surgeons of Washington in 1984. He is Board Certified in Urology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Phillips holds the position of Clinical Professor in the Department of Urology, at the George Washington University.
While practicing General Urology, he also has developed special interests in voiding dysfunction and urinary incontinence, in both men and women. He was instrumental in initiating the neurogenic bladder program at the National Rehabilitation Hospital, and was co-founder of the Washington Continence Center, where he served as medical director for 2 years. He also maintains an interest in the treatment of BPH with minimally invasive methods, and has been very active in the use of the Green light laser.
He is very interested in prostate brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer. He has been working closely with other physicians at the George Washington University Cancer Center to bring this technology to the institution.
In addition to his participation in resident and medical student education, Dr. Phillips continues to serve on committees at the University and within the Hospital. In the past he has served on multiple committees at Sibley Hospital, and was the Vice Chairman of the Division of Urology. He is currently a member for the Medical Faculty Senate at The George Washington University Health Sciences Center and is a past member of the Executive Committee of the George Washington University Hospital.
His wife Jill is an artist. They reside in the District of Columbia, and have 3 children, Kate, Molly and Greg.
