Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is defined as any involuntary loss of urine. Although it is more prevalent in older individuals, it is not a normal consequence of the aging process. In a study done in 1987, by Hu, the costs associated with continence care exceeded 10 billion dollars, in the United Sates, alone!
Incontinent individuals not only suffer from the frustration and embarrassment associated this problem, but also are more prone to disorders of the genital skin, skin ulcers, urinary tract infections and more. Money spent on absorbent garments, pads, and even laundry in institutional settings, is increasing on a yearly basis as a result of the rapidly enlarging incontinent patient population.
The causes are multifactoral. While there is some overlap between men and women, each individual must be examined with an eye towards different issues.
Our practice is well equipped to deal with incontinence issues in the adult population. When appropriate, we offer outpatient urodynamic evaluation, either in the office or surgery center setting. Our practitioners are able to offer the latest treatments, both medical, and surgical for incontinence in men and women. Referral for behavioral therapy is also available.
