In-Office Urine PCR Testing
You will undoubtedly have heard of a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test by now in the context of COVID-19 testing. But maybe not as a urine test. However, the similar technology is used to detect bacteria in urine. A PCR test, in fact, can identify more bacteria than a traditional urine culture which is often used in patients that have urinary tract infections or UTIs. Not only is it more sensitive to a wider array of bacteria, but the PCR urine exam can also detect bacteria that were simply not seen in the urine culture. And even with this greater sensitivity, PCR urine testing can be turned around more quickly than a traditional you’re in culture.
The Urologic Surgeons of Washington Urine PCR lab
We take a great deal of pride in the advanced technology that was used to create our in-office urine PCR lab. This lab allows us to diagnose urinary tract infections caused by a wide range of bacteria and do so with a great deal of accuracy. In fact, we are one of the few private offices in the area that offer this as it is usually reserved to hospitals and larger labs.
Why Does Urine PCR Testing Matter?
Urinary tract infections run the gamut from mild to deadly. And it is estimated that up to a third of all UTIs are multi drug resistant. Therefore, using the most advanced, accurate and fastest diagnostic solutions is critical. Many believe that UTIs are no big deal, or that they only happen in women, or that they are caused by poor hygiene. None of these are true and often delay care.
